What is the difference between a village and subdivision?

A subdivision is an area of subdivided* lots ...
*subdivide means to divide a part into smaller parts

... while a village is a group of houses in a rural area smaller than a town or a city area having its own shops, etc.

So are site developers going by the definitions when naming developed locations? Hmm, perhaps.
